Believing in the creative magic that New Orleans inspires, the Old No. 77 Hotel's Artist in Residence program invites an out-of-town artist to take up residence at the Warehouse Arts District hotel each summer during the month of July while the artist produces a collection of original works inspired by the Crescent City. The program culminates in an original exhibition of the work created during the city’s annual White Linen Night on the first Saturday of August.
Past artists in residence include: Hattie Lindsley and Shabez Jamal (2019) who crafted watercolor portraits and whose works are rooted in portraiture, documenting the journeys and narratives of the Black LBGTQ community, respectively. Chase Cannon (2018), a multifaceted artist hailing from a suburb of Indianapolis, produced a collection of graphite drawings inspired by the unexpected finding of a book of photographs by photographer E. J. Bellocq, known for his portraits of women in New Orleans’ red-light district, Storyville. Kate Lewis (2017), a Chicago-based artist, resided at the hotel while capturing the historic structures of New Orleans through large-scale black-and-white illustrations. Thomas “TJ” Kiser (2016), a student at the Art Institute of Chicago at the time, debuted as our first Artist in Residence. During his stay, Kiser kept a journal with writings and sketches of the architecture, people and places that sparked his imagination.
