WHERE THE MAGIC HAPPENS – TOUR THE OLD NO. 77 HOTEL & CHANDLERY’S ARTIST STUDIO ROOM

Located in New Orleans’ Warehouse Arts District, The Old No. 77 Hotel, an art-infused boutique hotel, has served as an incubator for emerging artists through deeply integrated partnerships with local artisans, New Orleans Center for Creative Arts – a regional tuition-free arts high school – and Where Y’Art – a local gallery located in the Marigny for which the hotel serves as a satellite outpost in the Arts District.

Debuting in the summer of 2016, The Old No. 77 Hotel launched an Artist in Residence program, inviting TJ Kiser, a student artist at that time from the Art Institute of Chicago, to live at the hotel for a month at no charge so he could explore and create in New Orleans’ unique artistic atmosphere.

The program has since continued, welcoming fellow Chicago artist, Kate Lewis who resided at the hotel the following summer of 2017 and Chase Cannon of Indiana in July of 2018. Last summer, two talented artists joined the ranks – Hattie Smith Lindsley and Shabez Jamal Shabez is a fine art photographer from St. Louis, Missouri, whose works are rooted in portraiture and documents the journeys and narratives of the Black LBGTQ community. Hailing from Dallas, Texas, artist and curator Hattie channeled her experiences through watercolor portraits and oil painting with an affinity for portraitures and hot sauce as her subjects.

Our guests and locals have the opportunity to connect with our artists during their stay, following along on their adventures in New Orleans through social media. Over the course of the month, they produce a collection of artistic works which culminates at an exhibition in the hotel’s lobby gallery space during the annual White Linen Night, a massive block party that draws thousands of art patrons through the galleries along Julia Street in the Warehouse District the first weekend in August.

With the success the program has experienced in New Orleans, Provenance Hotels will be taking the show on the road and expanding the Artist in Residence experience across our hotels and destinations, starting with Portland, Oregon.
