Things To Do On A Rainy Day In Seattle
While less drizzly than its reputation would suggest—Seattle is actually sunnier than cities like New York or Philadelphia—The Emerald City is no stranger to precipitation. When the rain comes, there are myriad ways to spend a day in town. Here are a few of our favorite ways to dodge raindrops, with some of the best indoor activities in Seattle.
Museum of History and Industry (MOHAI)
Nestled in the South Lake Union neighborhood, at the southern tip of Lake Union itself, lies the Museum of History and Industry. MOHAI is the largest private heritage organization in the State of Washington, with nearly 4 million artifacts, photos, and historical objects collected from around the greater Puget Sound area. Highlights of the museum include Boeing’s first commercial plane, an 1865 American flag sewn by women during the Battle of Seattle, and Rainier Brewing Company’s giant, iconic neon sign. See something that looks familiar? MOHAI also curated Hotel Theodore’s collection of artifacts. Museum of History and Industry: 860 Terry Ave.; 206-324-1126
Little Oddfellows Café
Tucked inside one of Seattle’s most beloved bookstores, Elliott Bay, Little Oddfellows is the perfect spot to lose a few hours on a rainy Seattle day. Grab a book, then plop down on one of the shop’s inviting pews. For just $3.25, you can get an “everlasting
coffee”—free refills from now until you finish your new read. Little Oddfellows & Elliott Bay Books: 1525 10th Ave.; 206-323-1511
Freeman Seattle Raincoats
It’s only natural that a Seattle-based company would perfect the raincoat. Founders and husband and wife duo, Brittany and Scott Freeman—two of Hotel Theodore’s Co-Conspirators—pride themselves on stitching jackets that marry enduring fabrics with classic style. Their most classic coat feature a sleek, minimalist design with a warm flannel lining. If you’re staying in a Hotel Theodore suite, you’ll find Freeman Seattle raincoats available for use, but be sure to check out the nearby flagship shop in Capitol Hill’s historic Loveless building. Freeman Seattle: 713 Broadway E.; 206-327-9932
Starbucks Reserve Roastery & Tasting Room
You don’t have to love Starbucks, or even have a great fondness for coffee, to appreciate this stunning, state of the art
roastery. Meet some of the company’s master roasters, learn how coffee moves from shrub to cup, and taste the differences between a variety of exclusive, small batch roasted blends. Starbucks Reserve Roastery: 1124 Pike St.; 206-624-0173
Seattle Aquarium
Have the kids in tow? Head to the waterfront, where the Seattle Aquarium showcases the amazing marine life found just offshore. It’s one of our favorite family-focused activities in town, home to thousands of fish, sharks, octopuses, and jellies, as well as several species of aquatic birds and marine mammals, such as otters, seals and sea lions. Get up close with them in six beautiful exhibits, ranging from coastal tidepools to open sea. Seattle Aquarium: 1483 Alaskan Way; 206-386-4300
