Desert X
Somewhere under the rainbow in the Coachella Valley you’ll find the third edition of Desert X. Opening on March 12th and running through May 16th, visitors can wander through a treasure trove of creativity that explores the desert not just as a place, but as a state of mind. The exhibition features many unique mediums that examine the social, political and cultural contexts shaping the stories of those who call the desert home.
Highlighting freshly commissioned works that pose important questions about our pasts while dreaming up the possibilities of a shared future, the event is one of a kind. Among the first installations to open in the area since lockdown, Desert X offers a safe, outdoor experience - free and open to all.
With Villa Royale as your free-spirited hideaway, you can make a day (or a few) of adventuring around the groundbreaking art.
A Glimpse at a few of the installations:
- Women’s Qualities by Ghada Amer: A social project that polled diverse communities within the Coachella Valley and takes the form of word gardens dependent on nature, care and other activities traditionally associated with femininity.
- In the Wishing Well by Serge Attukwei Clottey: Structures made from Kufuor gallons, used in rural regions of Ghana to move water from sources to homes, speak to the challenges various communities face regarding access to clean water.
- In the Passenger by Eduardo Sarabia: A large maze made with woven palm tree fiber walls examines the desert as a border through the trope of a journey – a concept that connects people across the world.
Modernism
Dive into all the aesthetics that Palm Springs is known for during Modernism, a celebration of midcentury architecture, design & culture. The online experience will continue until March 15th and the in-person event runs from April 8th to April 18th, created to spark appreciation of midcentury architecture and design by highlighting contemporary thinking in these fields.
From exclusive home tours of architectural gems to historic walks through Sunnylands Center & Gardens, the Modernism experience allows folks to dip into the deep creative roots of the Palm Springs area and explore the ways that education, preservation and sustainable modern living have influenced it.
